NEW SERVICE LAUNCHED FOR BUSINESSES TO IMPROVE EMPLOYEES HEALTH

Online health educator, The Sound Doctor has launched a service for employers to help reduce stress and anxiety in the workplace and improve outcomes for staff with long term conditions.

“The people who work for you are the lifeblood of your business and employers should be doing all that they can to ensure their health and well-being,” said Rosie Runciman, co-founder of Gloucester-based leading online health educator, The Sound Doctor.

“Especially if you consider the alarming statistic for any business, which shows that 137 million days are lost each year through employee absenteeism. The cost to the economy is an eye-watering £100 billion!”

The Sound Doctor is helping employers reduce the number of days employees take off work, and get them back to work quicker when they do need time off.

Employees will benefit from expert education and practical advice so they can look after themselves more effectively. This will deliver better health outcomes and improved quality of life.

“Our films, animations and audio podcasts easily communicate key health information to employees. Our animations are a great way in which to share difficult messages,” said Runciman. “Evaluations we have conducted show that our videos and audio programmes do change peoples’ behaviour - they need to visit their doctor less often, spend less time in hospital and are therefore able to spend more time at work.”

The new service from The Sound Doctor’ can help to prevent the three main common causes of the loss of 80 million working days each year:

  •          Minor illnesses: 34 million
  •          Musculoskeletal: 30 million
  •          Mental health: 16 million

The Sound Doctor recently found that over 60% of companies have put programmes in place to look after their employees’ health and wellbeing. However, worryingly this statistic reveals that just under half of businesses have done absolutely nothing to help employees in the last 12 months.

“This is staggering when you consider Workplace Health’s findings around the health of current UK employees,” said Runciman.

These findings show that of the 75% of adults in employment:

  • 1 in 3 have a long-term health condition
  • 1 in 8 have a mental health condition
  • 1 in 10 have a musculoskeletal condition
  • 42% of people with a health condition feel it affects their work

“There is no question that businesses must do more to ensure the health and happiness of their employees in their workplace,” added Runciman.

Having successfully established itself as a leading provider of bite-sized films and short audio programmes that improve the quality of life for people with long-term mental and physical health problems, to the National Health Service (NHS), The Sound Doctor is now offering these much-needed products to the private sector.

“The quality of the product is, in my experience, unmatched anywhere in the world,” said Dr Charles Alessi, Senior Advisor Public Health England.

The Sound Doctor’s team is acutely aware of the unrelenting business pressures of today’s uncertain economic climate.
